Today, prayer will change my soul.
Throwing a tattered net into the water, the old man was oblivious to me as I drove across the bridge from one island to the next. In South Carolina you see this often. He was casting for the shrimp that live in the marshes between these islands. Weights pull the net to the bottom, making it look like a parachute under water. I watched from my car as he pulled the net back up to try again, hoping to catch enough shrimp for dinner. Sometimes though, he just gets junk – bottles, hubcaps, shoes, and dead fish. These might be his only catch for the day. Often, when you throw your net out, you’re hoping for a lot. Sometimes, however, you don’t catch very much, or you may get something you never imagined. Watching the old man made me realize something about how we look at prayer. We often treat prayer like a fishing net. We throw it out there hoping to get something back. Something happens in prayer that you may fail to realize. Prayer changes you. Every time you pray, you tap into something that changes the quality of your soul for the better. It changes you instantly and permanently. You just can’t help it. Whenever you pray, your whole life becomes a little different than if you hadn’t prayed. That’s because prayer gets you closer to the source of change and growth – it makes you shine a little more. Prayer also makes you more aware of your need to pray, and that’s why we can’t live without it. Prayer is the only fishing you can do that guarantees you’ll catch something. Go ahead – cast your net right now!
If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. -Matt 21:22
